Tax Day is the infamous deadline for the American public to file their taxes. The IRS was established to sort through and record all tax submissions. It is a day of both frustration and eventual relief for most Americans.

The United States did not always tax its citizens. Abraham Lincoln established the first national income tax in 1864 to pay for Civil War expenses. The tax law was repealed ten years later only to be reenacted in 1894. One year later the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. Finally, an amendment was made to the Constitution in 1909 to establish the income tax once and for all.

Tax Day traditionally fell on March 1, but was eventually shifted to April 15 to alleviate the work of the IRS.
