The History of Grandparents' Day
Grandparents' Day began from Marian McQuade in West Virginia. McQuade had a vision to reserve a day during the year for respect for the elderly in nursing homes. She also wanted to encourage children to gain knowledge and experience from their grandparents' lives. The holiday became official in 1978 when President Carter proclaimed Grandparents' Day would fall on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Grandparents' Day Activities (With Grandchildren)
- Make necklaces out of pasta, beads, shells, or charms
- Create a scrapbook/photo album of times spent specifically with grandparents
- Grandchild can "interview" grandparent about his/her life
- Story time
- Crossword puzzles
- Create a family tree
September was chosen as the month for Grandparents' Day to reflect the "autumn" and "golden" years of life.
Marian McQuade, the founder of Grandparents' Day, had 15 children and 40 grandchildren.
