The History of Father's Day

The first Father's Day was an unofficial observance in Spokane, Washington in 1910. Sonara Smart Dodd wanted to show her single father of six children her appreciation. The holiday began to become more organized across the country until it was finally recognized as a national holiday in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson. Six years later, President Nixon permanently placed Father's Day on the third Sunday of June.

The origin of the necktie – one of the highest-selling Father's Day gifts – dates back 2,000 years.

There are over 65 million fathers in the United States (fact taken from U.S. Censor Bureau).
