The History of Black History Month

Black history was not largely recognized, studied, or documented by Americans until the 20th century. Dr. Carter G. Woodson noticed that blacks were absent from history books and established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History as a resource for the history of African American struggles and triumphs. In 1926, he started Negro History Week, which later evolved into Black History Month.

Black History Month, celebrated in February, is a time to honor, remember, celebrate, and recognize the events, triumphs, struggles, and life of African Americans. This holiday encourages reflection on past struggles and triumphs of all cultures and races.

February was chosen for Black History Month because several important events in black history occurred during the month. Some major events were:

  • Abraham Lincoln, W.E.B DuBois, Frederick Douglass' birthdays
  • The 15th Amendment was passed, giving blacks the right to vote in the U.S.
  • The NAACP was founded
  • Malcolm X, an important Civil Rights leader, was assassinated
  • Several students began a sit-in at the then segregated Greensboro, N.C. college which would go on to be known as an important Civil Rights event.

Rosa Parks is known as the "mother" of the Civil Rights Movement. While riding a segregated bus in 1955 she refused to give up her seat to a white person when the bus became overcrowded. News of her defiance and eventual arrest was heard by Martin Luther King, Jr., who launched a boycott of Montgomery buses. The black residents of Montgomery kept the boycott going for more than a year, when the Supreme Court finally intervened and declared segregation on buses unconstitutional.

Black History Month e-cards are the perfect way to spread awareness of this important occasion.
