Informal Business Letter E-Cards
The informal business letter is best reserved for people that you have met at least once or have spoken to
on the phone. The manner in which they communicate with you verbally or through
body language will dictate whether you can address someone in an informal manner.
If someone wants you to call him Mr. So-and-So then all mail and email correspondence
should reflect that formality. Keep in mind that 'informal' does not mean you
should be 'casual'. You are still writing in a business situation. Consider these
other tips.
Assuming you have the go-ahead to be informal:
- Open the e-card by addressing the person by name or starting
with "Dear."
- Do not address the message, "To whom it may concern."
- Be as brief and concise as possible.
- If possible, refer to a personal meeting or phone call you had that
will emphasize the purpose of the e-card.
- Do not use slang words or other informalities.
- Do use contractions and familiar phrases in the message to soften the tone.
- Be sure to close the card with an informal closing,
such as "Regards" or "Best".
- Always check your spelling and grammar.
